Clayhill students say they feel unsafe walking home at night

Students living at Clayhill have raised concerns about safety after a recent incident left a resident feeling followed on the walk back from Kingston town centre.

The incident happened just after 11pm last Thursday, when a student said a man followed her from the Fairfield bus stop toward the Clayhill entrance.

“I turned around three times and he was still there,” said Maya Patel, a second-year criminology student.

“I ended up calling a friend and staying on the phone until I got to my door.”

The route between Kingston town centre and Clayhill takes about 15 minutes on foot and includes several dimly lit residential roads.

Other students have also reported feeling uncomfortable walking alone late at night, especially in summer when parties and nightlife increase foot traffic.

The Clayhill Residents’ Group is now calling for the university to improve lighting along key walkways and consider increased shuttle service hours on weekends.

“There’s no emergency button or even a visible security presence once you leave the road,” said Andre McLaren, a third-year creative writing student.

“It’s not about paranoia — we just want to feel safe.”

Kingston University security confirmed it was “reviewing feedback from students” and considering ways to improve out-of-hours support for off-campus residents.

The Met Police said there was no formal investigation under way, but advised students to report any suspicious behaviour.

Posters advising students to “walk in pairs and stay alert” were seen at Clayhill reception over the weekend.
